PUNE: Ahmednagar-based NGO Snehalay has expressed its gratitude to TV show 'Satyamev Jayate' and actor Aamir Khan, as the fund of Rs 62 lakh raised by this show has come as a timely help for the noble cause of 'saving girl child ' and also to its project' Himmatgram'-- for empowering HIV positive people.

On behalf of 'Snehalaya', its director Dr Girish Kulkarni received the donation from Khan on Friday last week and thanked the donors.

Snehalaya has been working for the past 23 years for the welfare of sex workers in the red light area of Ahmednagar. It has expanded its work for the sex workers' children, HIV-affected people, deserted women and orphans. It also runs 'Childline,' a helpline for children in distress.

“It was really encouraging for our volunteers to  receive such a huge donation. An amount of Rs 5 lakh was generated through Airtel SMSes, while Rs 26 lakh was donated by donors across the country. An equal amount of Rs 31 lakh was contributed by Reliance Foundation. The donors can donate to Snehalaya for next two months via the foundation,” said Prajkata Kulkarni, one of the founder members.

Snehalaya will spend a major part of the donation for its campaign against female foeticide. “Many NGOs conduct awareness programmes for saving the girl child. However, our campaign is different. We appeal emotionally to the villagers, conduct programmes and motivate them to respect the girl child. Then, we certify the villages, putting ethical pressure on them,” she added. The organisation will also produce a documentary on the issue.

The 'Snehankur Adoption Centre' receives large number of premature, underweight female children. The money will be used to establish a basic care unit, with all medical facilities. The remaining sum will help them in developing 'Himmatgram.’

“It's a different attempt of bringing such people into the mainstream. These people are under depression. By group support, they will be rehabilitated in agro-based industries,” she added.

THE EXPENDITURE
The money will be used to establish a basic care unit for female children. The remaining sum will help in developing 'Himmatgram,' offering a life of dignity to HIV positive people.
